… and general data issues, fishing for data, refusing to delete data, data grabs and lawsuit etc.
From experience having worked at Pret, I know how careless Pret are with data, even to the point where unauthorised staff like Team Leaders would look at colleagues employee files including how much they are paid. I had “complaints” from a colleague why I’m paid more than him, while I NEVER share my wage with anyone.
Colleagues also knew my history where I lived (USA) without me telling them, all from my file. Shop managers also leave employee contracts open lying around on the office desk. I cannot count the times I discreetly folded a contract from a colleague without looking at it to shield it even a little bit from anyone coming into the office. As I didn’t have access to the file cabinet, I couldn’t lock it away.
These are just a reflection on the lack of care and training regarding data issues. But it’s not just a lack of care, it’s blatant data breaches Pret do and KNOW it’s just that.
Pret aggressively since 2018 collect data, mainly via private messages when customer have a query, but now of course via apps and the subscription.
In a NY Times article from 2020, Pret CEO Pano Christou speaks about data collection, quote:
ยปThe other benefit of the subscription plan is the chance to gather more data about its customers, who will scan a QR code each time they use it. โPret have been very, very late adapters to this,โ Mr. Christou said. Panera, he said, has a database of more than 40 million customers across the United States. โฆ I think the richness of data today gives you an opportunity to learn much more about your customersโยซ Link
Christou mentions Panera because Pret and Panera have the same owners and exchange info with each other, CEOs meet each other etc. And Christou also mentioned that Pret are late in the game of data collection compared to Panera and other companies.
And in one of his last interviews being the CEO of Pret, Clive Schlee is being asked by his long-time friend about submitting email addresses on a blog Schlee ran on Pret’s website. The interviewer was surprised that Pret now (2018 on) asked for email addresses.
Schlee answers that Pret until that point were more face-to-face. But in my own experience, Pret against popular opinion are actually lacking quite behind on especially digital issues. Pret are NOT as trailblazing as people often think. Especially with advertising, Pret use (exploit) “influencers” to do free/cheap ads on their Instagram accounts in exchange for a cheap coffee or one month subscription, IF AT ALL they get anything.
But of course, I’m not surprised on serious issues with data arising in Pret.
Here just a few to keep it short.
In the USA people sue more easily as the legal system in the U.S. is different than in the UK. And even here in the UK, when people do contact the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), Pret refuse to delete data, especially bank details.
Pret had complaints during the pandemic that they continued to withdraw money from customers’ bank accounts even AFTER people cancelled the coffee subscription. Some were charged for MONTHS before they realised money was leaving their account every month despite having received the cancellation confirmation.
Here just the tip of the iceberg and Money Saving Expert having reported on it:

.
To raise a formal complaint to the ICO, fill in the online form. If everyone who encounters data issues with Pret raises this formally with the ICO, Pret can get heavily fined. .
Pret were sued in the U.S. by ex staff for illegally taking fingerprints of staff to sign in and out of work.

Trustpilot reviews on data issues. And not only bad reviews regarding data issues, 74% of customers on Trustpilot (1&2 star reviews combined as of January 2025) disapprove of Pret on a variety of issues, many having sworn to never set foot inside Pret again.
Pret refusing to delete customer data, despite ICO getting involved:

Telegraph: “Pret changed subscription app ‘to harvest and sell customer data’, claim experts”
I believe that too, knowing Pret.

Little side note, journalists still use the old Pret logo with “natural food”. Many still don’t know that Pret were banned by ASA in 2018 from claiming their food is “natural”. Pret then changed their logo to “freshly made” food, which is also a lie as I know personally how staff mess with the food and expiry dates as well as customers not only post pictures of mouldy food online, but food poisoning reports have increased in different countries as well.
Regarding data issues, Pret have also continuously asked for new mobile numbers despite customers saying their registered number with the app is current and correct. But here is a new one that has even me shocked! Phone number versus SIM card AND device number!!!
Now, a SIM card number is different from a mobile device number. Can companies really see the SIM and/or the device number???
And if so, what does that have to do with the current, correct mobile number? Unless Pret are LYING again to know the device or SIM number to fish for more phone numbers AND/OR just aim to hinder customers from using the app to get the deals Pret advertise with the app/subscription.
Quote: “The mobile number registered on your account does not match the SIM card number on the device you’re now using. …”
So, this utterly bogus message talks about 3 completely different numbers:
- Mobile PHONE number to make and received phone calls
- SIM card number (which is very long)
- Mobile DEVICE number or just the mobile device
Either whoever came up with this tactic is completely stupid using such a lame excuse to fish for more data, or there’s something with technology I haven’t caught up with yet. But knowing Pret, I think it’s the first.
I don’t believe for a second that there is a way for outside companies to SEE aka detect the SIM and/or mobile device number. I truly doubt that!
But even if that’s possible, it’s unacceptable and like the poster says, “creepy” and “needy” behaviour by Pret. But then again, knowing Pret, they’re highly unprofessional behind the forced happy facade.

Further ways Pret cheat customers out of perks, half price deals, stars and perks dissappearing or never adding, weak wifi not able to login etc. etc. via the app.
Just a few from the tip of the iceberg:

etc. etc. etc.

It’s HIGH TIME that the ICO as well as Trading Standards investigate Pret in-depth! But unless more people raise this formally, nothing will change.

I worked at Pret A Manger and survived systemic workplace bullying during bereavement that involved HR, the top leadership, HQ and even the now โretiredโ former CEO Clive Schlee. Schlee has been appointed CEO of itsu in 2024 by Julian Metcalfe who gave him the CEO spot at Pret many years ago.
I declined 4 settlement offers if I am silent about my ordeal. But I rather speak out to help others. For an overview of important blog entries of my experience with Pret, please visit โMy Ordeal with Pret A Mangerโ. The little arrow to the right next to each heading will lead directly to the post.
An incomplete list on what other Pret staff say about Pret’s bullying environment: Caught in the Act Bullying at Pret and What shop MANAGERS & HQ staff say about Pret incl. CEO Pano Christou.
I tell my story for the first time verbally in below audio player interview on a podcast by The Adam Paradox, and wrote two articles in the Scottish Left Review as well as mentioned by the BBC.
