Heavy End

A thought not on a Happy End, but a thought in the middle of life to feel like it’s the end.

I wonder how much anyone can take at one given time.

I wonder if when ignorance is bliss, maybe trauma has a similar effect. I remember while I was going through bullying during already traumatic bereavement, I sensed in my gut that I was targeted, but because I was so clouded in shock, grief and switched into auto-pilot, it was like “bliss”. I was stumbling around a mess I can only now put together like a puzzle.

I used to feel ashamed for having let a multi-million pound company step all over my dignity. But I should be proud for having stood up against them from within, and now from the outside. I didn’t just do extremely well under the horrific circumstances, I can be and am proud that I stand in one piece, in some way having overcome things I never thought I would see the light at the end. I walked over bridges without jumping off. I am in one piece, even if mentally in a mess.

In 4 years I lost my brother, was bullied at Pret A Manger, lost my job, my father and now am going through a new, and maybe final loss. Because after this one, I shut the door. I can’t take anymore.

Shock, grief, anger, anxiety, hopelessness, pessimism, darkness… have been my closes companions these last 4 years. I don’t know anything else anymore. I am on constant alert. I forgot some things I used to love. I am just on alert until the heavy end. And you just have to go on…

TWO Pret A Manger Staff DIED this Month

I was leaked an email from people in Pret that was sent from Pret’s Director of HR Andrea Wareham to all Pret shops about TWO staff members, one from Brighton and one from Gatwick, having died.

I am told that one has died by suicide.

I have contacted the press and Pret needs to be investigated again.

I confronted Pret on a suicide of an Assistant Manager in 2017.

I almost died and survived this toxic company.

More detail on this and part of the email here >>> Why is Pret not being investigated like Amnesty International was?

Mental Disability

is something that happens to people.

Let me explain.

It’s like a physical disability.

You are born with it or you have an accident become physically disabled.

And don’t anyone dare to PC me on the term!

Mental disability is when someone is born

with a mental disability

or someone who developed it through trauma

Today we bask in the term of “MENTAL HEALTH”

and yet, we discriminate

to those of us who s*ffer

Kind regards

Today 1 Year Ago My Website Exploded

…and set off a chain reaction that still makes me chuckle, knowing how Clive Schlee works.

Late on the 28th of May 2018 I sent my website which mainly ran under LateNightGirl.org to a Pret A Manger Operations Manager, who used to be my OPs and whom I know cannot keep a secret. She has been working for Pret for close to 20 years now and doesn’t know any other company. She knows everyone in Pret. I sent it via Facebook and still have the message if anyone doubts this!

Up until the 28th / 29th May 2018 my site had about 5 – 10 visitors each day, sometimes 3, sometimes 0.

After having sent my website link to this OPs manager late on the 28th May 2018, early on the 29th May 2018, I checked my site and my statistics went through the roof into the 3-digid numbers!

To this day (29th May 2019) my website stats still show the 29th May 2018 as the most visited date! To date!

Even today!

BEST views ever 29May2018

And early in the night on the 29th May 2018, Clive Schlee, CEO of Pret tweeted this:

£1000_1

Link

… and most fell for it …

except only ONE person:

2018-05-29 Ann Donovan sees thru PR

…… and staff still waited for the money (£800 after tax!) into October 2018 …

2018-09-19 Meme USA

2018-09-24 Kevin Pavain re £1000

Kevin makes an important point about the timing of the announcement. What Kevin and all the others don’t know (he knows now) is WHY Clive Schlee announced it “pret-maturely”! I even posted the reason in September, but was shadow banned unbeknown to me at the time. So, not sure if people got the message then and there. I retweeted the info a few times after that on different occasions in some of my “late night girl” shifts!

This is Clive Schlee’s TYPICAL panic reaction to a problem he faces!

2018-09-28 Meme People Team

My response to Meme but it is hidden as I must have been shadow banned at the time without knowing it. Meme in the USA doesn’t even know what the Pret People Team is because in the U.S. many complaints from staff that they are discriminated against, British staff are preferred, they aren’t trained, HR is non-existent etc.
My hidden/shadow banned tweet visible via my Tweets & Replies:

And slogan of Pret’s HR department:

One Team Member got it right, money isn’t everything, but family is!

Zwischenbilanz (Pret A Manger)

So, here I am, after a year of writing, blogging, tweeting, surviving, recuperating and yet knowing I still disintegrate with “age” until the final crescendo that awaits us all, I do a stock-take on my life, my writings, my exposing Pret, my investigating deaths and lives of loved ones…

I want to thank those who cared, those who retweeted my bold writings, those in the background reading in silence, those who don’t know what to do with all this.

Many are investigating in the background, some are writing books and will take the credit for their “knowledge” on Pret, as we live in a copy & paste, 140 character society. We don’t know how to spell Encyclopedia, let alone know what it is or want to put in the work to learn, investigate, expose and risk a reputation that caters to fast-food, fast-thought. They will be fast forgotten.

I have recently created an index on my site and called it “The Most Comprehensive Website on Pret A Manger Anywhere on the Web“.

Because it is.

No other writings, book, website (apart from Pret’s website = facade itself) exists that gives insight into Pret like my expret.org site, after what I suffered. (Interview with my story at the bottom of this page).

I have presented Pret on a silver platter and learned a lot about people, this society and the attitudes that many on Twitter lament as #FirstWorldProblems.

People’s lives are ruined because their Vegan cookie has been withdrawn by Pret with the reason that Pret’s food team are “improving the recipe”. Other people aren’t so naive and the rumor floats around that the cookie wasn’t even vegan in the first place. My experience in Pret and their “imrpoving recipes” was that when items like the brownie disappeared for a while we where instructed to say to customers that the recipe is being improved. And when the cookie returned and I stocked up the displays, I suddenly was able to fill the counter with 4 in a row compared to 3 in a row before. That “improvement” means to shrink in size, okay, it certainly improved the bank account size of Pret.

Vegan not Vegan Rumour2

Vegan Cookie Drama

Other people’s lives in this First World are literally ruined after having lost their daughter and mother to hidden (unlabelled) allergens in Pret products.

My story should be known by now, if not, again, start with the interview at the bottom of this page.

My website is getting hacked regularly where “someone” from a certain hemisphere is trying to find ANYTHING on my site to get it shut down or via different ways get me penalized. Can the hacker at least come from the First World as well and get paid proper wages, or does the intruder have to be low paid as well as the regular frontline shop staff!? Please, do better whoever employs the geeks via different “middle-men”. WordPress finds excuses of course. Sometimes I sit at my computer at a quiet time of the day and only one visitor from a certain country is visiting my site, no other country is present, apart from myself, but WordPress doesn’t count my visit from my IP address. And I can watch LIVE as it happens where they mess with my site and pictures disappear, like Tweets that expose CEO Clive Schlee’s negligence etc. Sometimes I watch it as it happens and am in the live chat with the WordPress staff, pointing out what is happening as we speak…

The tricks and traps that Pret has dealt me with (I explain in my interview also on the Shadow Banning on Twitter…), just because they  didn’t want to have a strong policy in place that protects bereaved employees, let alone people with disabilities. Then they tried everything to get rid of me. I still debate in my mind if my story is stuff for a thriller or a comedy. Probably both.

No matter how hard I worked and how successful I made shop after shop after shop, with my written track record on my work, if you become bereaved, disabled in any way, you are simply an inconvenience for a multi-million, by now multi-billion pound company.

Anyone who calls a company “ethical” because they give some left-over food to charity, or buy a house (after learning of Social Bite’s project) to have former short-term and young homeless people live in and work for Pret… and other “charity” Pret boasts about, anyone who calls this company ethical while CEO Clive Schlee, who also partly owns itsu and other businesses, gets £30 million in bonus while frontline staff barely reach £10 an hour… they need to do their own stock take on what ethical really means.

Mahatma Gandhi is attributed to have said the famous, and unfortunately true words: “There’s enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed.”

The moment you turn from a robot into a human is the moment you die.

And the one thing I can say is, that there is nothing more liberating than becoming human.

THAT gives me the power and freedom to write…

Pret A Manger Kills People

Two customers died of Pret products

One AMK (Assistant Manager Kitchen) died by suicide. I almost did.

How many more?

Clive Schlee is an Angel of Light, who smiles and is approachable, but he sold his workers to McDonald’s, then Bridgepoint, and now JAB / Reimann family.

What’s next, Pret?

Please do stop hurting people.

Most people, including journos only care if they feel a “sorry story” is worth the masses.

My brother died and I was bullied in Pret on top of that.

Masses.

Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse lost their daughter to masses of sesame

Masses.

5 daughters lost a mother to a non-dairy dairy wrap

Masses.

Employees in this slavery company suffer

Masses.

Yes, I am bereaved. I lost my brother and fight for answers.

But Pret A Manger is a graveyard for hardworking people.

With a smile.

The Abyss of Pret A Manger

I know, I know, it seems like all I do is writing and tweeting about Pret …

Yes and no.

I do have a life that is precious to me, with people and activities that take and deserve a lot of time. Close calls of suicide with the trauma I survived, I speak openly about the stigma. For one, my mental health, still coming to terms about my brother’s death and all that happened in Pret… I am aware of the recent Pret A Manger reviews, but had no time to add to my “Quotes of the Day” like I did since last year, but haven’t done in a while. I may pick up on it again.

But here’s a review that is almost poetic!

For those who know my blog, you know what this is about. For anyone new to my website, I recommend to start with my interview at the bottom of this page.

I want to let this April review speak for itself and will update the “Staff Complaints” list with all the new reviews I have “neglected”, but they all speak for themself.

To any Pret staff, again, JOIN THE UNIONS!

Most Comprehensive Website on Pret A Manger

… from a former Pret employee having survived systemic workplace bullying and gaslighting under Pret’s HR, CEO Clive Schlee and a Development Manager from HQ, who’s also an NLP Practitioner and Hypnotherapist under the National Hypnotherapy Society. On a side note, many Pret leaders from HQ and Operation Managers are NLP practitioners. It seems Pret encourages them to the NLP course, and if one researches on Neuro-linguistic Programming, it is or can be a tool to manipulate people.

As my website has become quite large with various writings from behind the scenes, I decided to create an Index to the most important issues regarding Pret A Manger, that portray themself as this ethical and caring company.

I am still in disbelief myself on what I went through, and writing about it helped me survive and come back to my senses, and expose Pret A Manger! I declined 4 settlement offers from Pret if I am silent about my ordeal and never go to court. I explain in full in my interview at the bottom of most pages here or as the first feature of the below index.

The very fact that Pret did NOTHING after TWO customer deaths, a third nearly fatal, several hospitalized, and numerous warnings ignored, should ring massive alarm bells! But the public remains lulled in, especially in the UK whereas in the U.S. it would hail a storm of lawsuits! The German Reimann family behind JAB, the new owners of Pret, work very hard to divert issues opening in various countries in a whirlwind, more charity work etc.

I write so boldly and loud because I almost lost my life, having been targeted and bullied during already traumatic bereavement. I had several close calls at the bridge and am very proud that I made it through to expose this company!

If this is the only thing I do, having survived this toxic company that hides behind the shiny PR[et] facade and fake smiles, I will do it as thoroughly and detailed as I did when I worked for Pret! I wasted 10 years of my life in this company and explain in my interview how I went through this. This is not about a dis-grunted former employee, this is more. This is about a company that portrays itself to the public as this ethical company and lures in customers as well as employees, exploiting staff for profit. This is just a usual business out for profit as any company is, but the public has been lulled in for years about Pret A Manger and it is human nature to want to believe a fairy-tale…

I confront Pret on a suicide of an assistant manager in 2017 of whom I learned prior to her death. I almost went over the edge, Pret hid TWO customer deaths until it became public, how many suicides of current or former staff happened no-one knows about.  I was recently leaked an email that Director of HR Andrea Wareham sent to all Pret shops informing them that two Pret staff have died in two different UK shops. One of them I was told was a suicide, the other person’s death is unclear to the persons who leaked the email. The press is informed and in my 10 years in Pret having had access to Pret emails as I was a team leader, I have never seen an email regarding staff deaths.

Pret must have learned from the customer deaths they never even told us  about and also my situation that the truth will always come out.

It is my biggest regret having wasted my time, skill, effort and care for Pret A Manger.

If people don’t believe my story, I have evidence and confront Pret openly on Twitter, Facebook etc. Again, I explain in my interview why Pret is not responding. All I can say to everyone regarding the nice facade of Pret or any company is:

If something looks too good to be true, take a closer look!

The below Index takes openness to read, as many people want to believe the fairy-tale that is Pret A Manger. Only the Unions, Activists and some from the Press know better and look closer.

Illusion

I start the index with my own story in an interview and continue with general issues, categorizing as best as I can. Any reader and writer, please be aware of the work I’ve put into this website before you just cope & paste and mind the copyright. I have other websites as back-ups. I am open for any interview and article feature, as well as questions.

Any new writings in the future that I may add, I will indicate as UPDATE or NEW.

UNRELATED TO PRET – But important

> My call-in to BBC radio show of Dotun Adebayo early morning on Christmas Day 2019. The subject of the show was »What does “Christmas spirit” mean to you?«. One of the questions was, if more people are alone at Christmas than it used to be, and what people’s experience is with Christmas in general. As I was up, I just called in. I didn’t speak about Pret, as death and grief is already “heavy” as it is on Christmas Day and I don’t think a BBC radio program would be ready to hear about Pret! I kept it “light” I hope.

(My losses happened in a span of 3 years, not 5 years, I just spoke from looking back on 5 years.)

I have spent over a year writing my hands into a carpal tunnel (not really, just using a metaphor!) on what I’ve been through in Pret A Manger. I described how systemic and toxic Pret’s bullying is behind the smiley facade!

I can wrap up my whole experience and website in this one text:

UPDATE 29. June 2020 – SECOND class action suit against Pret on the “Natural” Food claim
(at the bottom of this page)

Even while I worked at Pret I always wondered how Pret’s claim to be certified Organic and Fair Trade regarding their coffee can even be valid. Not making any allegations, just raising questions! To get certified as being organic is super expensive for companies.

UPDATE June 2020: A customer raised the question on Facebook if Pret’s coffee is no longer fairtrade & Pret confirms it’s no longer fairtrade, but it used to be, at least on paper:

2020-06-01 No more fair trade marked

Link

The unconscious mistake most of us make, and why companies employ expensive marketing and psychology is, when looking at the signage that is being fazed out now after the class action suits on the natural claim, it says in a round logo: “Organic Coffee Natural Food”. Or now the new signs “Organic Coffee Good Food”. Clever marketing knows “eye-level, buy-level” and in most countries we read and write from left to right and all from the top down. And many times I read it on Twitter especially that people recommend Pret to others as this “organic food” chain…

But even if Pret would claim to sell organic food, the ingredients that are delivered from factories every morning are PERFECT, the eggs are all the same size and often the same bleak yellow colour, the bananas are perfect etc. But Pret claims their coffee is organic, okay, we have to “swallow” that until someone can prove otherwise. I just raise the question as I know how much the coffee costs having had to do the ordering for the day-to-day running of shops. If customers knew how much it costs for Pret to produce a cup of latte, including the coffee, milk, cup, lid and labour… people would get sick at the profit margin. That’s why Pret can afford to give so many free coffees and then turn around, raise the price as someone has to pay for all the freebies. And it won’t be Pret!
On the Free Coffee marketing I write extensively on Free Coffees in Pret A Manger.

Back to the “Natural” issue. The round logo gives us the impression of “Organic Food” as our brains move automatically from left to right and top down. So, the way our brains work and the psychology these businesses apply is, we don’t read “Natural Coffee” but we read “Organic Food”. But Pret of course will say that they never claimed to have organic food, but organic coffee. They “throw” the perception back at the customer again, and I wonder if anyone is looking closer into the organic coffee claim, especially as Pret’s new owners, tax-haven Luxembourg based JAB Holdings estimated worth £28 Billion squeeze coffee farmers to sell at lower prices! HOW can Pret’s coffee then be organic?

.

JAB

Link to The Economist article.

.

Pret has been sued for their claim to be natural while the food contains glyphosate for which the mighty Monsanto, now owned by Bayer, currently has more than 13,000 lawsuits on their neck. With three major lawsuits lost in the billions, due to denial that their main product Roundup causes cancer, which has not had a warning label on the product. Bayer upon purchasing Monsanto in 2018 set aside $250 Million for the expected lawsuits, but has bitten out a bigger chunk than they can chew in legal bills, and the shares have tumbled towards the basement since the verdicts. Bayer never expected that the jury would now draw the line, as the fake laboratory tests Monsanto conducted saying that Roundup is safe, coming to light. But that’s another story altogether.

So, if the public has been paying attention regarding Pret’s signage, I have seen it more lately even in London that Pret signs are changing due to the successful vs. “natural” claim lawsuits. More and more it says “Organic Coffee Good Food” now. How about changing it to “Organic Coffee Labelled Food”!!

2018-12-10 Pret froced to remove Natural from sign

From the above familiar signage where the “natural” is now being replaced with “good”.

Even on Pret.com, the word “natural” seems to have completely disappeared.

.

Link to Pret USA Twitter as the U.S. shops have to act fast

A customer on Twitter posted the below pictures confused on why the word “natural” was covered over at LAX airport that is getting ready for its first Pret on the West Coast, as JAB / Reimanns are on a mission to expand fast, trying to restore Pret’s reputation and divert from all the scandals, especially the TWO customer deaths. They divert with swamping first airports and busy train stations in new areas. In the U.S. Pret has to act on the “natural” signage while in the UK everything is lenient again.

Two customers died from hidden allergen in Pret products, a third nearly fatal, several hospitalized and Pret did not act after numerous warnings before and even after the deaths occurred. Pret only started acting slowly after the deaths became public.

Same with the “natural” food claim.

From @scholeyphotos

And from TheDrum.com article, quote: “Pret A Manger has been told by the ASA that it must “not claim or imply that its food was ‘natural’, unless its products and ingredients were in line with consumer expectations of the term ‘natural.”

And in order to help Pret be more honest, I changed their sign free of charge:

.

UPDATE:

June 2020 New Classaction in NY. Barton v Pret on the natural claim. Full 2020 Court document.

March 2019: Cunningham v Pret. Full 2019 Court document.

The court document lists all the chemicals Pret is sued for while claiming to have natural food. Scrolling down to the list of chemicals in Pret food, same with the 2020 document.

From page 10 onward in the 2019 document are listed:

Maltodextrin
Citric Acid
Malic Acid
Lactic Acid
Ascorbic Acid
Diacetyl tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides
Mono- and diglycerides
GMOs
Glyphosate

UPDATE: 10. Dec. 2019

Well, let’s add sulphites to the list!

.

2019-12-11 Not Natural

Link

Now it makes sense why Pret never wanted to label their products, even after numerous complaints and warnings regarding the allergen issues, and even after TWO customers died of hidden allergen in products. Pret only acted when customer deaths became public! But avoiding labelling Pret’s “natural” food is because it is LOADED with chemicals!

And the current update is that Pret’s argument to get the case thrown out is, in a nutshell: We tell people that our food is natural, but they should know that it’s not natural. 😀

Quote:

September 13, 2019

  1. Pret A Manger Looks To End $5M Suit Over ‘Natural’ Label Pret A Manger has again asked a New York federal court to toss a $5 million proposed class action that claims the sandwich chain’s “natural” label is misleading because its products contain GMOs, saying its customers know that no processed food is completely free of synthetic ingredients.” 😀

Wow! A yes isn’t a yes, and a no isn’t a no! If the Judge buys that, oh my, Justin K Small in above Tweet certainly is pissed off!

But this reminds me of a Trainer in Head Office when I went for my Team Leader courses and after we inquired about the healthy image Pret presents. The Trainer gave us a crash course in the calories in products, with the Posh Cheddar being the product with the highest calories, he then said with a smirk that customers make decisions if and how much of those items they consume. In other words, even with all the high in salt, high in calories, high in fat products, well if the customer chooses to eat it, it’s up to them. It was a good peek into Pret’s real  mentality behind that natural, healthy and smiley facade.

So, with the natural claim, in a nutshell Pret is saying:
“Hey you stupid customer, we tell you that our food is natural, but you need to be smart enough to know that it isn’t. And if you choose to swallow the natural claim, well, that’s your decision!”

Yours sincerely,
Ready to Cheat

On the Frontlines of Pret A Manger

With JAB / Reimann’s takeover of Pret, they are exploding from here on, purchasing sandwich chain rival EAT. with the plans to bow to public demand, turning the 90+ EAT. stores into Veggie Prets. The work environment of Pret will spill over to EAT.

EAT. as an imitation and the most serious competition to Pret is known by Pret staff as being more relaxed and less strict. EAT. has always been a sore in Pret’s sight, so one can imagine the triumph they must feel (all on workers’ backs!). Many Pret staff that I also worked with, especially leaders, left Pret and went to EAT. after they couldn’t handle the harshness of Pret anymore. They said that they rather get paid less and have less stress.

I’m sure current EAT. staff will be taken on more or less. Andrew Walker, CEO of EAT. used to be Pret’s UK Managing Director and has his story of why and how he left Pret …

Photo: eat.co.uk

After the initial rumor mid May 2019 before the confirmation days later, the slogans are already out there quickly, as Pret A Manger means ready to eat, Twitter is full with “Ready to Eat EAT.” and “Pret swallowing EAT.” posts.

My concern remains regarding employees as I have survived Pret on another matter (my podcast interview at the bottom of this post). Perfect timing that my experience with Pret was also published in the May/June 2019 edition of The Scottish Left Review at the same time the rumors of the EAT. purchase circulated on Twitter.

How the leadership structure will be changed with Andrew Walker CEO of EAT and Clive Schlee, Pret’s CEO and their past “issues”, time will tell. But both companies in mid to end of May 2019 aren’t the highest scores from staff reviews on Glassdoor as well as Indeed and other sites. A little over half of EAT. staff and less than half of Pret staff recommend working for their companies on Glassdoor.

Regarding staff reviews of Pret, the below Slideshow at the bottom should make it clear why less than half recommend working at Pret.

The Scottish Left Review, a monthly left wing magazine published my story in their May/June 2019 edition.

I copy the full article here with link to the publication. I submitted the text which was slightly edited for grammar as English is my second language. But the text has been written by myself with information given to the magazine on the Pret Union and the I-Hate-Pret-A-Mangerpreth8ers” Facebook group.

On the frontline: crushed by corporate capitalist culture
Fighting-Back-Logo

Late Night Girl’ tells of the bullying behaviour at work she suffered and how she is fighting back.

My story with Pret-A-Manger is very complex and long. Only in hindsight, do I think I understand the extent of what I’ve been through and how systemic the problem of workplace bullying in profit driven companies can be.

I have always worked in the food industry in three different countries. I have worked in a hotel, wine bar, canteen and various restaurants and cafe chains but I have never experienced the stress and discrimination I went through in Pret. Only now, when I have contact with unions (like the BFAWU) and activists, do I realise that this is a growing problem as a result of capitalist globalisation and the accompanying intensification of competition.

Before I worked in Pret, I was an assistant manager (AM) in Caffe Nero. Nero was a lot of stress, but nothing like Pret, and the atmosphere with colleagues and managers was relaxed. I left Nero as Pret paid better. Even as a new team member, I got paid more than as an AM in Nero. I would not have left Nero if the wage was not so poor. Little did I realise that the reason Pret pays a little more than its competitors is because the work is so intense, incredibly stressful and with a bullying environment under poorly trained management.

But I’m used to hard work and don’t shy away from it. I started in Pret in 2008 just when Bridgepoint, the private equity investor, purchased Pret and put forward the target to open on every street corner (in London specifically). That meant a lot of managers were needed, but there was not the effort to really train them, and most have neither people nor leadership skills.

But again, I gave Pret the benefit of the doubt, thinking in time when I moved on or rose upwards in position that it would become easier. I never expected this bullying environment – which at first I denied was happening as it happened in every shop I worked but it continued and even intensified when I was bereaved.

I was a team leader of the shop floor – there is a separate leadership in the kitchen – from around 2011 onwards. Team leaders do the real work, whereas managers tend to sit in the office, come in late, leave early, look important, go to meetings etc. Team leaders are blamed a lot while not being supported.

My story really starts to become horrendous when my brother died. This in itself was the most traumatic event in my life and I never expected to be treated so badly with the seeming intention to have me leave my employment as bereaved employees seem quickly to become something of an inconvenience in Pret, and often in many other companies.

My brother died in December 2014 in his flat and was not found for approximately six days when neighbours smelt the strong odour of his corpse. My brother was self-employed – after having gone back to studies, he started his own business as an environmental advisor on green energy to companies. He travelled throughout Germany where I’m from, so it was not unusual that neighbours didn’t see him much.

We didn’t know for five weeks that my brother died, and to make it even worse, the police did not investigate properly, not finding us and after a few weeks just cremated him. I have written extensively about this on my blog (https://expret.org/). Here, I summarise what I went through in Pret.

I travelled back and forth between London and Germany for the funeral, running errands, investigating what happened, brought my mum with me to London as I had to continue to work. I spent all my savings with all the costs and was forced to return to work.

I had basic support from Pret as staff receive a few days ‘compassionate leave’. But that was all. I was never sat down and told what support I may need, and was also put on late shifts which kept me from vital support from friends as I worked when they were off and they worked when I was off. Initially, I didn’t mind and didn’t even notice, as I couldn’t sleep until the morning anyway as I was tormented with shock and grief. I kept going to work to keep me occupied and distracted as best as possible.

I approached human resources (HR) informally to make a suggestion on how to support bereaved employees. But unbeknown to me at the time, I believe this inadvertently put a ‘target on my back’ and my superiors, I think with the guidance of HR, started pursuing me with little issues where I made mistakes (but my mistakes were even less than those of my colleagues).

One of several Mystery Shopper (MS) requirements is that staff have to smile, be friendly and show happiness all the time. Only recently have I learnt that this is called ‘emotional labour’ that is forced upon low-wage workers and I have since written about it. Also, in Pret, staff have one minute to serve customers, one minute to serve the hot drink from the time of payment, are tested to see if they give eye-contact, make some polite remarks etc. The MS even times the service to the second. I give a few examples with excerpts of MS comments on my website.

If teams fail in any or several points, the whole team loses its bonus. The bonus system is the biggest chunk towards managers’ remuneration. So, managers are extra strict when staff fail. I was traumatically bereaved: I even begged sometimes to be sent into the kitchen, away from the shop floor as I was tearing up at times and didn’t want to be seen by customers. I couldn’t afford to go home as I had had to spend all my savings. But I was denied this with the reason that I’m not used to the kitchen and would be slow. Everything in Pret has to be done fast. ‘Time is money’, customer circulation in and out of shops has to flow fast, meaning the money flows fast.

After I approached HR informally, I also requested a transfer to a shop where I would have rotating shift patterns, as my then general manager refused to give me rotating shifts as the evenings weren’t as busy and the MS visited very rarely in the evenings. I was warned when I didn’t smile by an area manager, and was summoned into the office on my day off because I made some minor mistakes. I was sent to another area and shop that had lots of problems, and in hindsight, I believe, I was sent there to set me up for failure.

I quickly became paranoid and felt I was targeted. And, I think I was right because months later I applied for my employee file which included emails between HR and managers who were brainstorming all the time what to do with me. I was constantly put under pressure in the hope I would resign. But I didn’t. I even declined four settlement offers if I’d resign and never speak about my ordeal or go to court. Three offers were made internally and the fourth was via the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) when I withdrew my Tribunal claim as my dad just died in the middle of preparing for the case. I could not afford a lawyer and was unable to fight this on my own.

I have collected other staff reviews from employment review websites, YouTube, Twitter etc and I have learnt the hard way that, without a union, there is no hope of raising issues of systemic workplace bullying. Many people were shocked and disbelieving when I mentioned how Pret really is behind its well-polished PR facade. Only the unions, activists and some from the press have believed me.

The targeting I went through was everything apart from sexual and physical violence – the typical bullying, both open and subtle. I was shouted at and, when this didn’t work, I was excluded from leaders’ meetings, was not given important information I needed to do my job, and was sent to difficult shops to receive a disciplinary for failing even in little things. Pret, it seems to me, works mainly with fear management.

The more perverse thing Pret did was with emails after I became ill. I believe I was targeted in group emails from my boss, in the emails I read between HR and managers etc. I spiralled into ‘ill emailing’. I received a disciplinary for the emailing but Pret used a Development Manager who told me she had also lost her brother in similar circumstances to my brother. She went into personal text messages and emailing with me because of our common grief. But this confused me further and, only in hindsight, does it now seem that I was being set up to get fired. I believe I was ‘gaslighted’ and then fired while my dad was in intensive care, just out of a coma. CEO Clive Schlee labelled me his ‘late night girl’ due to my late night emails to everyone which then lead to my firing. I adopted that label to be a sore in his and Pret’s eyes. I confront Pret openly on Twitter and Facebook about this.

Because I have never experienced anything like this in any workplace, I was so traumatized with my brother’s death and the circumstances surrounding it, I became so out-of-sync giving Pret the benefit of the doubt again and again and putting blame on myself and what psychologists call ‘Sibling Survivor Guilt’. I even apologised for a nervous breakdown after a line manager rebuked me repeatedly in front of my team. For an overview of my trauma with Pret, I have created a ‘Mind Map’ linking each title to a blog entry as my blog has grown: https://www.mindmeister.com/1194255218/my-pret-a-manger-ordeal

‘Late Night Girl’ also tweets at https://twitter.com/LateNightGirlMe and she was recently interviewed on a podcast based in California where she tells her story in more detail (see front page of her website: expret.org).

• The editor adds:
There is a facebook group, started in 2011, called ‘I Hate Pret A Manger’. And, a now former employee, Andrej Stopa, helped start the Pret A Manger Staff Union (PAMSU). He was reportedly fired in 2012 under the pretence of him allegedly having made homophobic remarks. See also the case of Rodrigo (in boxed graphic), another fired union activist. Unfortunately, both groups are not very active now. Unions like the BFAWU and UNITE are continuing to try to unionise Pret. For more on the employment practices of Pret, see The Guardian and The Independent.
