A Pret A Manger Fan trying to hold me for an Idiot

Upfront to new readers, I worked at Pret for almost 10 years running shops. Yes, I know! Why so long. Simple, I was as brainwashed and fear managed as they are. But I know Pret’s mentality and games like nothing else.

On Bluesky a customer (Nikki C) received a freebie in Pret and I explained to her why Pret give freebies via my “Free Coffees…” post. Basically that it is NOT due to kindness but for marketing and that the staff giving the freebie can get the ยฃ100 mystery shopper reward. Of course customers don’t like to hear that Pret staff give freebies for extra cash as it takes their illusions away where they thought staff think the customer is so special. So they go out of their way trying to justify Pret’s bullshit to me, who knows Pret and their games like the back of my hand.

I further sent the customer my post about how Pret lie and also steal from staff in my post: “Cheating, Lies and Theft at Pret A Manger“.

Amongst several examples with EVIDENCE from court cases, the press, my own expeirences etc. I showed the newly added tip devices in Pret where customers can pay a tip electronically via their card payment. And knowing Pret I wrote in that article that I’m sure Pret will ALSO steal those while claiming that all the tips go to staff.

Here a tweet from 2023:

Pret claim that “ALL tips go directly to staff”. And my “prediction” that the tips will NOT go to staff.

Link

.

.

And Nikki C. in her zeal to defend Pret’s dodgy practices proved me right and I thank the Pret staff for accidently telling the truth:

.

.

I know Pret and their games like the back of my hand. Pret used to have tip boxes in their USA shops. I visited New York City in 2008 including a Pret store where they still had tip boxes for cash as tipping in the USA is almost mandatory.

I visited NYC again in 2013 and the tip boxes in Pret were converted to charity boxes. Pret stopped the tipping altogether.

Here in the UK, Pret implemented donation boxes VERY close to regular payment devices where customers then accidently donate ยฃ5 thinking they paid. They are then prompted again to pay. And Pret knowing that customers feel embarrassed to claim money back from “charity”, they placed the donation devices strategically.

The refunds are also not given by Pret, but third party company GoodBox. And katchink, Pret had a 122% increase in donations.

.

.

.

And how do donations, charity and trusts work for companies? I explain that in my post “The Pret Foundation Trust” and how companies use trusts to get more cash via “charity”. I share a link to a video in that post regarding the secrecy of trusts and how they are exempt from financial scrutiny. Most people don’t understand that companies use EVERYTHING they can to get more and more cash.

And then Pret implemented tip devices for staff, claim that all tips go directly to staff while in reality it goes to Pret’s pockets via “charity”. Katchink! And Nikki C. proved my point how Pret STEAL from staff and lie where the money goes to.

Nikki further writes quote: “I agree it should be clearer that these payments are donations not tips…”

Sorry Nikki, but white washing a big fat lie won’t cut it. Pret staff suffer too much for that! A lie is a lie. And theft is theft. No sweet-talking around it.

Also Nikki writes quote: “I’m sure they make the no tips policy clear during staff training.”

Dear Nikki, which staff training?? ๐Ÿ˜€

You should get your heard out of the clouds and apply for a job in Pret, but UNDERCOVER and make your OWN experiences in what training there is and how “generous” Pret are.

.

.

Finally, Nikki continues to lecture me on staff wages and she feels so clever thinking to inform me how generous Pret supposedly are.

Let me respond to your points Nikki.

.

.

  • Pret staff paid above the “National Minimum Living Wage” ๐Ÿ˜€ What now, above “minimum wage” of above “living wage”. Can’t be both! Pret claim they pay the living wage, again, a lie. I write about Pret’s pay which is NOT ยฃ14.10 like Pret try to fool everyone in my post: “Pret’s Vague Payrise“.

Pret don’t pay the living wage. Pret pay about 50p above the minimum wage to lure workers in. And then they coerce and manipulate staff to work overtime for free, delay pay, “forget” to pay hours worked etc. etc. etc. I write about this exploitation on my post: “Pret CEO Reputation with Staff“, especially with shop managers as well as HQ staff. Shop managers are on a monthly contract of a 42.5 hour week, but are forced to cut labour hours and then work 60+ hours, overtime unpaid. This abuse is then passed down to hourly paid workers as well. An endless cycle of exploitation.
    .
  • Pret staff get free meals and free drinks
Of course they do! EVERY food business gives free meals and drinks. If they won’t it would be unethical as well as employees would steal food for hunger working with food. This is not a great generous gift by Pret. Get a reality check about food businesses.
    .
Pret work their staff so hard, that they don’t even have time to sit down and eat. Staff are also bullied behind the counter to NOT drink water in the summer. I know what I’m talking about!!! As a team leader I disobeyed my managers and allowed my teams to drink water behind the counter! Pret stopped paying the breaks during the pandemic and took other benefits away to enrich the CEO and shareholders further.
    .
A customer once observing how staff are treated in REALITY:

.

.

Further in Nikki’s lecture to me on Pret’s “generosity”:

  • Pension fund: You really don’t know that pension funds are a type of investement into corporations? A pension should be the basics of every person, not just an investment into corporate funds. Most companies do pension funds now. Again, nothing out of the ordinary.
    .
  • Training opportunities: Again, nothing out of the ordinary. Most companies provide training opportunities. But in Pret, the staff are “trained” on their own private times, on their breaks, at home when they are NOT paid. IF they are trained at all!!! The “training in Pret is appalling! Even in my time before private equity really started the squeeze on us staff, I and my colleagues had to train outselves! And no, don’t blame private equity, Pret were always cheeky, but were better able to hide it in the good, rich times.
    .
  • Free shoes: Pret started to give free shoes around 2016-ish because they demand that staff wear black shoes, but many still turned up with other colours or cloth-shoes that cannot be wiped clean. These shoes are very cheap and extremely uncomfortable. Again, shoes, uniforms etc. should be a given that they are provided by the company. Again, nothing out of the ordinary.

Dear Nikki C, before you try to be smart and lecture me on anything related to Pret, put your sleeves up, apply for a job in Pret UNDERCOVER (!) and work there for a month and then come back to me. And no, not “I know a Pret staff who’s happy…” Nope, not that game, but YOU YOURSELF, go undercover for a FULL MONTH, and then tell me again how generous Pret are and how they don’t lie, cheat and steal from staff.

I suggested for journalist Amy Sharpe to go undercover into Pret, and she only lasted a week! But thank you Nikki for proving my point that Pret ARE thieves, cheats and liars. Please thank the Pret staff who provided you with the info for accidentally telling the truth.

Undercover Under Pressure in Pret“.

Read the small print at the bottom of this Mirror report: “… and staff who are hugely over-stretched.”

.

.

Finally Nikki, here a YouTube version of how Pret A Manger lie, cheat and steal from customers, and most appallingly, from low-wage staff. Pret have no shame.

Enjoy your Pret experience and keep up the “good” work furthering Pret’s bullsh!t. I’m sure you will get a voucher in the mail for your services to Pret (in exchange for your data/address etc ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

.

.

I LIED, the REALLY really final thing is again my all-time favourite social media post by a woman who learnt that Pret made “temporary” pay-cuts permanent. I could not have said it any better!

I worked at Pret A Manger and survived systemic workplace bullying during bereavement that involved HR, the top leadership, HQ and even the now โ€œretiredโ€ former CEO Clive Schlee. Schlee has been appointed CEO of itsu in 2024 by Julian Metcalfe who gave him the CEO spot at Pret many years ago.
I declined 4 settlement offers if I am silent about my ordeal. But I rather speak out to help others. 1. Quote of the Day #62 – Pret A Noxious

I decided to do two “quotes of the day” today as they are both from New York within days of each other.

Go back to the UK, Pret
I have never worked in such a toxic, unprofessional corporate environment. Employees relocating from UK were given preferential treatment, better salaries for equal experience, HR was mostly a joke, ‘leaders’ displayed zero initiative in mentorship of their teams, roles were unclear and the company had tunnel vision on decision making based on the opinion of one or two people who paid little attention to local market data.

A Chink in the Armour of a Firm

or as I call it a crack in the PR(et) facade!

With plenty of press on Pret now this one I’d like to put my salt on in-between some sentences of this article:

โ€œItโ€™s difficult to say when, but at some point over the last ten years Pret A Manger became ubiquitous.โ€

It’s very easy to say when, it was indeed 10 years ago when Bridgepoint bought Pret and set the target of opening shops at 15% per year. I can still feel it in my bones and mental health how we were driven while staff were cut to increase profit and a 7 times return for Bridgepoint’s investment and ยฃ30 million for CEO Clive Schlee.

โ€œPretโ€™s coffee is organic, its sandwiches are handmade, its marketing is self-aware and it wants you to know that doing the right thing is โ€œwhat makes Pret, Pretโ€.โ€

Handmade by human machines while โ€œdoing the right thingโ€ ignoring numerous warnings from customers regarding allergen and labelling, bullying staff to the point of suicide including bereaved staff. It what makes Pret, Pret.

โ€œThereโ€™s never a shortage of โ€œavoโ€ at Pret.โ€

And never a shortage of complaints how hard the avos are. I only copied this complaint as an example how Pret is kissing butt while a customer offends shop staff with the C-word. But there were many complaints on hard avo. Amazing also how some people’s days are “ruined” while others lose a child and a mother to Pret products. Poor pepo!

PretBehaviour01a

โ€œThe people at Pret are always happy, so happy that they might give you a free sandwich if they like youโ€

So happy. ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€œIn fact, the staff at Pret are so happy that in 2013, the chain was accused of using โ€œemotional labourโ€ tactics โ€“ monitoring staff to ensure they retain a cheerful demeanour โ€“ on its own workforce.โ€

Correct. Staff are being bullied, ordered into the office when the Mystery Shopper, or as I call them the Misery Shopper, commented that the server didn’t smile. A good telling off in the office with plenty of fear management and fear for job security. Then the staff is send out and ordered to smile! Even during illness having a cold and during bereavement!

2014-12-01 MS cough

Mystery Shopper comment: โ€œTeam members should smile at customers and may not work when ill, as team member was coughing whilst serving me and was therefore not feeling cheerful to smile that day.โ€

The worst telling off I experienced was when a line manager, who himself never smiled, held a sermon in the kitchen with us team and said that smiling is part of the uniform! He then finished his speech and said that if anyone wants to say anything to say it ‘now’, then and there, or otherwise we shouldn’t come to him later. I lifted my hand and mentioned that I rather want to tell him something in private as I didn’t want to confront him in front of my team as I was their team leader wanting to lead by example not embarrassing the boss in front of them. But he maintained to speak up now and that later would be no opportunity.

So, I did. I said, โ€œSo-and-so, you never smile! (when serving customers)โ€ โ€ฆ At least he changed a bit, but I certainly did not make friends saying this. Neither did I care.

โ€œ…the list of โ€œbehavioursโ€ staff must exhibit reportedly contains over 50 items.โ€

Correct. A list of brainwashing that some staff threw into the bin.

โ€œPret ran into trouble earlier this year, when the Advertising Standards Authority took issue with two ads the company had run in 2016. Pret was found to have been โ€œmisleadingโ€ in its claims that products were โ€œgood natural foodโ€. Whilst this didnโ€™t grab headlines, it was a chink in the armour of a firm thatโ€™s clean and ethical image has been a source of its success.โ€

I appreciate the writer pointing out this being the โ€œimageโ€. It used to be quite dirty in Pret with pest problems that turned Pret into Pret A Mice until an EHO closed a shop and Pret only RE-acted, whereas before ignored staff’s and internal pest control people’s concerns.

โ€œIt was an early caution, perhaps, to the crisis that has engulfed the firm in the last two weeks where two of its customers were believed to have died after allergic reactions to is products.โ€

Plus one assistant manager who died by suicide last year that is known of within Pret and my repeated approach to confront Pret internally on this when I still worked in Pret, and now publicly, as I almost ended my life as well during my ordeal in Pret.

โ€œIt follows the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who passed away in 2016 after eating a Pret baguette that did not have any allergen labelling on its packaging.โ€

Not only on the packaging, but the fatal Sesame Natasha died of was missing on the fridge label of the “lovingly made” PR(et) baguette that Natasha and her dad read …

No Sesame on Label

(Sesame info missing)

… while each product that is given to charities for the homeless and people in need is being labeled with allergen info since years:

2018-10-20 Pret charity labels2

(Products with allergen labels for charity)

โ€œHer father accused the chain of a โ€œcomplete dereliction of dutyโ€โ€

… as well as being a โ€œwolf in sheep’s clothingโ€, and rightly so.

All in all you just got another crack in the wall

crack-695010_960_720

โ€œPret CEO Schlee said that the chain would โ€œensure meaningful changeโ€, and will start โ€œtrialling full ingredient labelling, including allergens, on product packagingโ€ from November.โ€

Trialling from November. Starbucks closed 8000 stores in the U.S. After their incidence with racial issues, training their staff. ACTION is the best PR! But Pret is going full steam ahead doing business as usual, trialling…….! A death, let alone TWO the public knows about doesn’t mean anything to this sweet-talking company. If that doesn’t tell people something of the reality behind the โ€œdoing the right thing โ€ with even the arrogant slogan that Pret’s HR has of โ€œdoing the right thing naturallyโ€, then I rest my case!

Right Thing Naturally

โ€œ’We cannot begin to comprehend the pain the family have felt, and the grief they will continue to feel,’ said Schlee.โ€

He certainly took two years to โ€œbeginโ€ to realize that he can’t begin to imagine and finally wrote to Natasha’s family!

โ€œWas Pret too late to act? It is not legally required for stores to put allergy labels on food made on site, but the warning signs were there. According to the Times, Pret โ€œignoredโ€ nine cases of allergic incidents related to sesame, including six related to its โ€œartisan baguettesโ€.โ€

More than nine!

โ€œThe lawyer for the Ednan-Laperouse family told a West London court that there was a โ€œclear concern being repeatedly raised that artisan baguettes were causing sesame seed allergy problems, which were not properly responded to by Pretโ€. Pretโ€™s compliance director said the firm responded appropriately to each individual complaint at the time.โ€

The Director of Risk-taking and Complacency did not respond properly.

โ€œSchlee, who is reportedly set to pocket a ยฃ30m windfall when the JAB sale goes through, didnโ€™t write to the bereaved relatives personally until this August, the family claims. Not a good look for a brand that trades on an image of wholesomeness and honesty.โ€

Anyone in business who claims honesty should always get a closer look!

โ€œDespite being undoubtedly the biggest crisis in its history, no one expects the burgundy star to vanish from the high streets anytime soon. Its ruthless expansion under private investment is widely expected to continue stateside thanks to JABโ€™s experience in the American market (JAB also own Douwe Egberts coffee and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts).โ€

Yes, that’s true, they will not vanish and I appreciate it being coined as “ruthless” expansion. They will just go through a year of a little nose-dive in profits and will re-emerge with more bull-crap PR. But I lived long enough to know that when people are lucky enough to be on their death-bed and able to look back on their lives and “achievements”, I don’t want to be in their skin.

โ€œIf the chain loses its avocado-driven charm, no number of free coffees will pep it up.โ€

That’s true, but also the time is coming when even Pret workers will start standing up with Unions and demand respectful treatment, apart from the poor wages and the brainwash they’re subjected under.

A Message To Chains

For my people in the shops and on the streets, being loud and clear to say that we care for more than just peanuts and we deserve better than the disrespect we encounter for too long…

I miss my colleagues, working with them shoulder to shoulder, so I march with them shoulder to shoulder…. This is for them… more to come ………

ball-and-chain-2624325__340

A Message to Chains

One of those mornings

when I enter the shop

waiting for my colleagues to arrive

I am extremely down that day

but I keep going

Setting up the coffee machine

putting the frozen croissants into the oven

answering the phone to a colleague calling sick

putting down the phone

picking up my heart

I keep going

My team’s starting to trickle in

one by one, tired but Pret A Faire

I’m glad to see them

we all disperse to our jobs

and later the boss arrives

but I keep going

Noon-time

I want to press the snooze button

No! I want to smash it!

So exhausted!

Rude and ungrateful customers

boss having a go at us

colleagues fatigued

but I keep going

Hours missing from my pay

getting told off for nothing

rota changed without notice

and I keep going

Made a mistake

nothing much

but a catastrophe for my boss

so I keep crawling

Feeling low after life’s blow

going to work without pay

without help, with no meaning…

being bullied…

I keep going

and I strike

I strike

I strike

I strike back!

Quote of the Day #36 – Pret A Unpaid

Quote of the Day:

If you don’t want a lot of stress in your life, avoid this place. Unorganized management always pushes you to finish in time and a lot of time they forget to pay you out. … A lot of dumb and disrespectful employees. Very unfair company
